Former New York City police detective Greg O’Connell began buying properties here in the 1980s, renovating them with an eye toward rejuvenating the commercial district. After his success in Red Hook, O’Connell moved on to other communities farther Upstate, including Mount Morris, near his alma mater of SUNY Geneseo.
